Bill Boyd, an 82 year old WWII veteran was in a car crash in 2005 and was treated for whiplash. They sent him home, but about a week later they called him to let him know know that he had a worse injury - he'd broken his neck. The only thing was, he'd done it 62 years ago. During WWII, Bill was an engineer on a Lancaster bomber which was attacked from which he parachuted to safety - but little did he know it, his neck was broken in the escape, but he just thought he had one nasty neck ache. Not long after he was captured by the Germans and put into solitary confinement in a tiny room where the only thing he could do was lay down on a rock hard mattress - a position he stayed in for weeks. This is what saved his life. The Germans had no idea his neck was broken and neither did he, but their act of imprisoning him is what ultimately saved him. With nothing to do but lay on his back, Bill Boyd had no reason to bend over or move his head. Doctors told Bill that if he had done something so much as bend to tie his shoelaces it probably would have either killed or paralyzed him, so he was actually very lucky indeed to become a prisoner of war.
